Why See San Francisco Symphony - Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue?
An American classic
San Francisco Symphony takes their lead from the glittering high energy rhythms of the Jazz Age with this recital of perennial concert hall favorite, Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. Capturing a slice of city life, it is instantly recognizable from its sultry opening notes.
Somewhat inspired by a steely rattling on a train journey to Boston, Gershwin wrote of his process ' I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our metropolitan madness.' It premiered in 1924 and by 1927 had sold a million copies.
Opening night: 8 March 2018
