Ridiculous Orfeo at SFO
This hideous production featured the shrieking of a breakdancing contratenor who could not sing the role, extraneous dance ensembles throughout, and chorus costumes that made the singers look like people wearing trash bags or the remnants of a linen sale. The Eurydice and Amore sang well, but the contratenor was a disgrace. This is a great contratenor role if sung well. Also, the director made him act as if he were afflicted with a dire gastrointestinal malady, which made him contort his body continually. Ironically, with all of the superfluous and distracting dance in the production, the director cut almost all of one of the most beautiful orchestral dance interludes ever written, the Dance of the Blessed Spirits, a concert hall and operatic favorite. This entire production was tortuous to anyone who knows this opera or just enjoys good opera. Shame on SF Opera!
