Absolutely loved it. The actors are passionate and skilled. They certainly have brought delight into the originally dark story but the show is meant for audience who already have a grasp of the plots, so we don’t need to expect it to be too serious.

Uneven and inane

Very disappointed for the fist time in Berkeley rep. I see critics like this but for me and others in our row: thank god when the intermission came. They left. So did others in front of us. Play mostly yelling and screaming randomly for first 2/3 before it morphed into theater. Good show after intermission at describing what they were up to in expansion of the story line. Overall, I enjoyed watching the cellist pick up his accordion from time to time.

Hatred, inhumanity, and manipulation by those in power... this is our world in 2022 . So why do we need to go to the theater to see more of the same ?

Experimental theater....ugh. Another disaster like the current Oklahoma. Waste of a lot of talent.

Rice rehashes past choices

Work has the same fingerprint of other Rice productions. Folksy choreography. Chorus members running in circles, swaying, sidestepping. Lead male has a change of accent midshow. Death is always accompanied by projected birds in flight. Long, overwrought. Hope for choices that are subtle and sophisticated. Was never emotionally moved, never intellectually stimulated by the material.
