The Glass Menagerie at San Francisco Playhouse

Why see The Glass Menagerie?

The future becomes the present, the present the past...

As the writer himself is considered one of the greats of American drama, The Glass Menagerie is regarded as one of his finest works. Telling the story of faded Southern Belle Amanda Wingfield and her domineering personality over her children as she attempts to adapt to the poverty she now discovers herself in, it's a bittersweet memory play that crystallizes one bygone era while yearning for another through the lens of a fragile family. Directed by Jeffery Lo.

Described as "epic and intimate", the play follows Amanda and her attempts to find a suitor for her daughter, Laura. Narrated by Tom, we watch as he brings home a work colleague whom Amanda and Laura both hope to be a potential match for Laura. Abandoned by their husband and father several years earlier though, both women find their own hopes and insecurities come to the fore as the evening plays out.
