Deep Inspiration

The romantic wilds of Scotland are given life by the San Francisco Symphony and conductor Marta Gardolinska who makes her SF debut, as they present Mendelssohn's tribute to the rugged Scottish landscapes, inspired by a trip to the British Isles in the early 19th century. Also joining the company is Pablo Ferrandez, the renowned cellist who takes on Elgar's Cello Concerto.

Whilst on a walking tour in 1829, Mendelsson found himself struck by a long-forgotten chapel at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. A highly historical site now reclaimed by nature, the chapel had once hosted the coronation of Mary Queen of Scots. Inspired, Mendelssohn began his symphony there and then, before finishing it later on in Italy. Listen out for the picturesque landscapes and sombre tones that will transport you far back in time and across the world.
