An Unexpected Delight

I entered the theater knowing nothing about the book or the play beforehand. I was familiar with the cultural expectations of women in Afghan society; my companion was not. Because I was not distracted by the ever-worsening events in the plot, I was able to notice and admire the sets, scenery, costumes, staging, lighting and music, which were amazing and enhanced the visual presentation. The performances of the actors were compelling, inspiring many layers of emotions. My companion was shocked by the cultural norms and horrified as the abuse wended its way to Mariam's final scene. I was pleased to see how the use of the "flashback" to explain various events in the past provided insight into each character's development. I know it was very helpful for anyone unfamiliar with the cultural norms. I was emotionally caught up in all of the characters' conflicts and even found an explanation for Raheed's growing desperation to fulfill society's expectations of a "man". Informative.
