First seen as part A.C.T 50th anniversary season in 2017, Khaled Hosseini's electrifying 2007 novel returns to the Geary once more for a run this summer. Following on the heels of his 2003 hit The Kite Runner, this Carey Perloff-helmed production takes us back to Afghanistan for a story of sisterhood, love and human endurance. Featuring many of the original cast alongside composer and saw musician David Coulter.

What is the story?
A family-based epic, the story takes us into the lives of three generations of Afghan women, thrown together by the bonds of marriage, family, and a secret past, all the while negotiating the danger of modern-day war-torn Kabul. We are introduced to the self-reliant Laila, who after finding herself unmarried and pregnant, is ordered by the religious police to marry her much-older neighbour following the destruction of her family and home. Trapped In her new home, she finds herself an unlikely ally in Mariam, the neighbour's first wife. Relying on each other's kindness and resourcefulness, they overcome the odds of their positions to raise a family together, bringing new hope for a new, enlightened generation.

An Unexpected Delight

I entered the theater knowing nothing about the book or the play beforehand. I was familiar with the cultural expectations of women in Afghan society; my companion was not. Because I was not distracted by the ever-worsening events in the plot, I was able to notice and admire the sets, scenery, costumes, staging, lighting and music, which were amazing and enhanced the visual presentation. The performances of the actors were compelling, inspiring many layers of emotions. My companion was shocked by the cultural norms and horrified as the abuse wended its way to Mariam's final scene. I was pleased to see how the use of the "flashback" to explain various events in the past provided insight into each character's development. I know it was very helpful for anyone unfamiliar with the cultural norms. I was emotionally caught up in all of the characters' conflicts and even found an explanation for Raheed's growing desperation to fulfill society's expectations of a "man". Informative. ... Read more
