Last performed over three decades ago, the winning ballet was created by the balletmaster in 1962 and is set to the music of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream overture and incidental music, works said to inspire Balanchine to create the ballet in the first place.
Enter a realm of myth, magic, mischief and mistaken identity, where fairies rule and love eventually prevails. Two sets of lovers become entangled in a lover's spat between King Oberon and Queen Titania, the woodland rulers. Throw into the mix the naughty sprite Puck and a group of hapless mechanicals, and you've got a recipe for old school comedy gold.
