Mark Elder conducts the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in this performance of Richard Strauss' incredible 1896 tone poem. With its unforgettable opening fanfare and heart-stopping movements, it has since become synonymous with space exploration and the cosmos after Stanley Kubrick chose it as the theme for his seminal 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The program also features a generous list of other great music, with two works by Hector Berlioz - the overture to Les Nuits d'ete and SF Symphony's first performance of the Le Roi Lear overtureDebussy's Prelude a L'Apres-Midi D'un Faune and John Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine. A wide, varied and exciting program from San Francisco Symphony!
