Why see San Francisco Symphony - Salonen Conducts Beethovens Pastoral?
A Countryside Romp
The delights of a fresh summer's day are evoked by cheery melodies and chirruping glee in Beethoven's sublime Symphony No. 6. Otherwise known as his 'Pastoral' Symphony, it was inspired by walks the composer would take in the Austrian countryside where he honed his great love of nature. Expressive and gentle, Pastoral' Symphony stands in marked difference to his 5th symphony, despite the fact that they were composed at the same time.
Conducted by the excellent Esa-Pekka Salonen, alongside the concert's showpiece the conductor's own Cello Concerto will also be performed by the symphony for the first time, with the spotlight given to principal cello Rainer Eukidis. Rounding it off is Claude Debussy's timeless La Mer, evoking the atmosphere of the ocean at Davies Symphony Hall.
