Les Miserables

Why see Les Miserables?

The Spectacular Hit Returns!

Cameron Mackintosh's epic musical is back! Based on Victor Hugo's novel, this sweeping epic is one of the most popular musicals in history, a tale of love and revolution that draws audiences in time and time again. Its classic score, written by Herbert Kretzmer and Claude-Michel Schonberg, includes the timeless 'I Dreamed A Dream', 'One Day More' and 'Do You Hear the People Sing'.

Nominated for three Tony Awards, this latest Broadway production is a more than worthy chapter in Les Miserables' long history. It debuted at the Imperial Theatre in 2014 and ran for two years, drawing huge acclaim for its stripped down storytelling, which jettisons some of the bloat attached to previous productions, and the atmospheric video projections that lend the show a hugely cinematic backdrop.

What is Les Miserables About?

Two years after the Revolution of 1830, France is on the brink of violence once again. Dismayed that one king has been replaced by another, a group of rebels are plotting to overthrow the monarchy and lay claim to the throne for the common people.

Against this backdrop of simmering rebellion, we follow the story of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict who manages to build a new life for himself and his adopted daughter Cosette. Yet his new found happiness cannot last for long, because the unrelenting police inspector Javert, who has been hunting Valjean for two decades, is close on his tail. As Valjean's past finally catches up with him, all of the characters are swept up in the chaos that breaks out on Paris 'streets, in an epic story of thwarted love, forgiveness and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Critic's review

So go. Be transported. Get caught up in the tidal wave of emotion. Cry if you are inclined. Hum the music for days on end. And then, if you love that feeling, go again when it comes back. Which, eventually, it will.

Amazing

I'm what you might call a Les Mis junkie...I own all the different cast recordings, I've seen the show over 10 times, and I've read the book (yes, the unabridged version) three times. My background with Les Mis being what it is, I'm a bit opinionated. In a word? Amazing. Still moving. I love some of the changes they made (speeding up the music, changing the special affects...). Do I miss the spinny stage? Of course, but in this case now, the actors need to depend on their ability to tell the story (and SELL it - which they do), and not depend on a gimmick. The SF cast brought their A-game to the show. The musical and acting ability of every one of them was top notch. I've seen Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, and I know I'm committing Les Mis blasphemy here, but I honestly think Peter Lockyear was the best Jean Valjean I've ever heard. Go see it. Take a box of tissues with you, and enjoy this recreation of a timeless story. ... Read more

Certainement un doit voir !

I saw the Broadway musical Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, an uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. It was an excellent script, with powerful actors whose lungs never gave up; the re-imagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, which included the integration of video during the chase scenes in the Paris sewers, were remarkable and lifelike. The songs were of many moods—angry, jubilant, romantic, and wistful. The whole audience were in awe and standing ovations were well earned by the crew—All in all, it was unquestionably a spectacular production from start to finish! Definitely a must see, for all, including children. ... Read more

Across the Board Excellence, But Know the Story Before

Every voice excellent, ensemble best of four prior experiences. Some of the vocal presentations at six star level. Loved every minute. But, a word of warning, if this is a first Les Mis experience, learn the story well before attending. The staging is excellent, but a bit of the love/responsibility story is not sold to the audience. For me, that was a "who cares" as I knew the story, but if it was a first time, I think following the story would have been quite difficult. ------ We saw a matinee and I wanted to attend again in the evening. ...
