Why see School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play?
Comedy Exploring the Ups and Downs of Growing up as a Teenage Girl
Labelled as 'the African Mean Girls' the work of writer Jocelyn Bioh explores the social ranks amongst young girls at an exclusive Ghanian boarding school. The new play explores the inner worlds of teenage girls and how they interact and socialise with each other during the highs and lows of growing up.
Popular girl Paulina is eager to win the Miss Universe pageant but feels threatened by new girl Ericka, who also possesses the beauty and grace required to receive the crown. What happens next highlights the struggles that teenage girls have to deal with across the world.
The play opened to critical acclaim and a sold out venue. It went on to receive the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for New American Playwright.
