Why see Chinglish?
The cross-cultural comedy
Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (the writer of M.Butterfly) explores the cultural barriers between America and China in Chinglish at the San Francisco Playhouse, directed by Jeffrey Lo. Lauded by Time magazine as 'The Best American Play of 2011', discover this trans-cultural, trans-continental comedy in summer 2023 at the esteemed venue.
What is the story?
Chinglish follows the humorous story of Daniel, a Midwestern American businessman who is desperately looking to score a lucrative contract for his family's sign-making firm. Deciding on the Chinese market, he travels to the provincial capital of Guiyang, only to learn how much he doesn't understand: his translators are unreliable, his Australian-born consultant, Peter, maybe a fraud and he is captivated by Xu Yan, the beautiful, seemingly supportive government official who talks the talk - but he has no idea what she is saying!
