My Fair Lady at San Francisco Playhouse

Why see My Fair Lady?

The rain in Spayyyn...

The musical that launched both the careers of Dame Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn this uplifting musical comedy of upward mobility, snobbery, and love is a firm favorite in theater canon. Based on George Bernard-Shaw's novel Pygmalion, Lerner and Lowe's My Fair Lady is the irresistible rags-to-riches story of a poor flower seller who is plucked from her corner in Covent Garden by a haughty professor who wishes to win a bet - he can raise anyone to high society, just by teaching them to talk the talk. Directed by Bill English and with music direction from Dave Dobrusky, don't miss this loverly musical as it closes the San Francisco's 2024/25 season in the summer of 2025.

What is the story?

For stalwart Professor Henry Higgins, a person's voice is of the utmost importance. A keen proponent of phonetics, he believes that with the right accent and tone of speech, anything is achievable. To prove his point, he wagers a friend that he can teach cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle to speak 'properly', and then present her as an upper-class lady in society. So the pair's lessons begin, but little does Henry Higgins know, that their time together will change him just as much as it does her...

Regarded as one of the greatest musicals of all time, this jubilant show features the songs 'Wouldn't it be Loverly', 'I Could Have Danced All Night', and 'The Rain in Spain'. It premiered on Broadway in 1956, with Andrews in the role of Eliza, and won six Tony Awards.

Absolutely excellent lead actor

This show was perfect for a first night back at the theater since the start of covid. The set design was quite nice, the actors dynamic (none of their performances disappointed) and the singing lovely. In particular, the actor playing the lead of Eliza Doolittle was quite an electric actress, not to mention her absolutely stunning voice! She really made the production something special ... Edited show Tucson

There were some technical complications, as the “rotating house” apparently was stuck in one position. After a short hold, they were able to restate the production and carry on. How incredible is that?? And what a production! Who needs a spinning house with such a talented cast! And this “Prince of Transylvania” - total smoke show and absolute unit. My family and I are trying to get tickets for the evening show right now!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

Modern Take to a Traditional Musical

The ensemble was extremely talented, particularly the actress who played Eliza Doolittle and the secondary actor who sang “on the street where you live”. Great supporting voices, costumes and interesting revolving stage concept. It’s a well staged revival - with a modern twist to the ending. I was wondering how this musical which focused much on class and gender differences would be seen through a contemporary lens - the producers obviously added more diversity to the cast and a “feminist” conclusion. Clearly a modern interpretation of a very traditional and classic musical. I’d strongly recommend it to children, teens and adults who appreciate a great theater experience. ... Read more
