What is Hairspray about?

It's 1962 and the Fifties are out. Change is on the horizon and the civil rights movement is gaining strength. Meet Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion; to dance on her local TV station show. However, she finds stiff competition in the form of slender, blonde Amber, who is meanness personified, coming second only to her pushy glamorous mother who is determined her daughter will win at all costs. My only complaint was that the orchestra occasionally played over the beautiful singing voices. One of the best Broadway shows we have seen at the Overture, ever! Go see if if you can. ... Read more
