Gluck's thrilling tale of a love so strong that even death cannot stand in its way
A tale of a love so strong that even death cannot stand in its way, Gluck's heart-wrenching retelling of the Virgil myth is one of the most influential in the canon, with Mozart, Beethoven, and Wagner each borrowing aspects for their own works. Now presented by the San Francisco Opera for only the second time in the company's history, prepare to join Orphuen on his daring adventure to the Underworld in this brand new production directed by Matthew Ozawa, with choreography by Rena Butler.
What is the story?
Based on the Greek myth, the opera tells the tale of renowned musician Orpheus, who deeply mourns the loss of his wife Eurydice. The godlike embodiment of Love comes to him, telling him that he may go into the underworld to retrieve his soulmate on the condition that he can calm Hades' fearsome servants the Furies, and keep his eyes ahead as he leads her back to the mortal realm. So Orpheus undertakes the supernatural journey in the ultimate show of eternal love for his bride.
