San Francisco Opera - Tosca

San Francisco Opera - Tosca at War Memorial Opera House

Why see San Francisco Opera - Tosca?

All Rome trembled before him. Except her

Intrigue and betrayal abound in this epic new production of Puccini's tragic tale of the ill-fated singer, who's lover's political leanings find her in a web of misfortune and murder that ultimately leads to the downfall of all involved. Dramatic and bursting with romance and tragedy, the story of the opera singer and her unwavering morality is one of the most enjoyed the world over.

Under the cloud of rebellion on all sides, Rome is in the middle of a tumultuous change as the Royalist regime is winning over the Republic. Whilst the merciless Baron Scarpia is rounding up rebels and jailing them, Tosca rehearses in a church before meeting her lover Cavaradossi and his fugitive friend Angelotti. When the embittered Baron catches up with him he falls for Tosca, much to her anger, and tortures her lover in front of him. If she yields to him, she is promised his life under the guise of a false execution. But Scarpia's meanness knows no bounds and before the day is out, all life will be extinguished.

I was born, and have lived in the East Bay since 1943, I had plans to move to Tucson, Arizona in 2001, and I wanted to experience the S F Opera before I left for good. I invited the principal from an East Bay Adult School to attend with me as a first date. Our carriage was BART, making the road into S.F. and out after the evening easy and pleasant. Above the Civic Center BART Station are good restaurants that make reservations and fine food available. After dinner, we walked to the Memorial Opera House. The evening was warm and clear adding to the enjoyment of the night. Our seats in row six afforded us a perfect distance and view of the presentation on the stage. The program that night was Tosca. It was performed by artists of great skill. I was advised to use Tosca as my first opera experience because it is lighter and less serious than other productions. I enjoyed the evening. My first music genre is jazz, but now I have opera in my CD collection. Mom go? Of course !! ... Read more
